If you allow your brain to spiral to the negative something small can become something big

here is some help to stop that from happening

LET’S GROW

If you allow your brain to spiral too far in the wrong direction something small can become something big.

I had to…

This was a lesson I learned within my therapy sessions. My therapist gave me a tool that has helped me greatly and I want to pass it on to you.

Exercise : I want you to think about a memory that makes you feel a positive emotion. This memory can be from any point in your life. If you are in a safe place to do so, close your eyes and really immerse yourself there. Now, give me one word to describe the feeling that memory gives you. Now that you have that word, close your eyes again and repeat that word, many times, out loud, while you are in that memory.

For me that word is peace. The memory it would take me back to was sitting on the edge of a stone amphitheater on the side of a mountain in Boulder, Colorado. I was watching the sun rise with a friend. It was such a wonderful moment and, because of that exercise I just shared with you, I go back there often in my mind.

This is where I go in my mind. I mean come on!

When do we use this skill? Whenever we feel negativity bubbling up and we feel like we don’t have control of it. A small example of this is someone cutting you off in traffic. It’s annoying and I also get a mini rage sometimes when this happens. There are two main ways to move forward. I can curse, get annoyed, and stay annoyed; Then inevitably something else happens and it compounds. Two small things can become a big thing and affect the rest of my day and possibly transfer to my loved ones. Or I can stop myself, say the word peace, and transport myself to a happier place. Then just move on with my day.

This is my tattoo commemorating this place. Me healing my inner child

It’s amazing how making it through just that initial feeling can squash the power it has over you. In the end, you won’t think about that person cutting you off the next day. So, how important is it? There is the famous quote:

Challenging your emotions with logic helps. Being honest with your emotions helps so so much.

Asking yourself questions helps with that logical thinking. There is walking again haha
