How to get out of survival mode

When I was younger I was constantly in survival mode. Suspicious of everything because of the experiences that I had. Eventually, as an adult I was no longer in that position, but my brain hadn't shifted. Before we get into the informational part of this, I'll tell you what I did.

Initially, I was mad at the survival part of my brain because it was causing unnecessary strife in my life and I would yell at it. I found after a while that wasn't successful, and through talking with my therapist he gave me this advice.

“That survival part of your brain was necessary to get you through a really difficult time in your life. Instead of telling that part of your brain to go away, maybe try and thank it for getting you as far as it did and protecting you how it did. Then let it know it's not necessary anymore.”

I found myself more at peace and more in control over my reactions, especially through therapy.
