How to reset after a failure

Last week we spoke about letting go of our past mistakes. A major issue I have is the initial reset after making a mistake. I believe that reset is a huge part of preventing toxic rumination from taking hold.

Why is resetting so hard for people?

We confuse an event with an identity

A mistake happened.

Our brains often turn that into:

  • "I failed" → "I'm a failure."

  • "I made a bad decision" → "I make bad decisions."

The mistake becomes part of our self-image instead of remaining a single event.

The brain treats social mistakes like physical danger
