How to Stay Connected When You Disagree
LET’S GROW
I was researching a concept called The Four Horsemen. Dr. John Gottman identified four behaviors that consistently predict when relationships begin to deteriorate. They don't cause conflict; they make conflict unsafe.
This concept was originally applied to romantic relationships, but I think it can apply to any kind of conflict within a meaningful connection.
I've found that conflict itself isn't the enemy. The way both parties handle conflict determines whether a relationship grows stronger or weaker.
I used to avoid conflict, but that wasn't healthy either. The next step for me has been learning how to have conflict in a healthy way. The first step is recognizing and avoiding these destructive behaviors.
1. Criticism
What it is:
Attacking someone's character instead of addressing a specific behavior.
Instead of:
"I wish you had texted me."
It becomes:
"You're so inconsiderate."
The conversation shifts from solving a problem to defending an identity.
2. Defensiveness
What it is:
Protecting yourself so quickly that you stop listening.
It's the instinct to explain, justify, blame, or counterattack.
Most people become defensive because they feel accused.
Ironically, defensiveness often confirms the other person's feeling that they aren't being heard.
3. Contempt
What it is:
Communicating that someone is beneath you.
Eye rolling. Mocking. Sarcasm meant to wound. Name-calling. Talking down to someone.
Contempt says:
"I'm better than you."
This is the most destructive of the four because respect is the foundation of every healthy relationship.
Without respect, trust eventually disappears.
4. Stonewalling
What it is:
Emotionally checking out.
Ignoring.
Walking away without explanation.
Giving the silent treatment.
Refusing to engage.
Sometimes people stonewall because they're overwhelmed, not because they don't care.
The issue isn't taking a break. The issue is disappearing.
If you identified some of these behaviors within yourself, don't feel bad. So did I, and I'm trying to shift them too. That's why we're here.
I made this chart to help us see the different behavioral shifts we can choose in order to grow.

The Four Horsemen aren't really about arguments. They're about what makes people feel emotionally unsafe.
When people don't feel safe, they stop being curious.
They stop listening.
They stop assuming good intentions.
Instead, they start protecting themselves.
For a long time, I thought the goal was to avoid conflict altogether. But avoiding conflict doesn't build healthy relationships, it just delays difficult conversations until they're even harder to have.
I'm learning that healthy conflict isn't about winning, being right, or never disagreeing.
It's about creating enough safety that two people can solve a problem without becoming the problem.
We can react from fear.
Or we can respond in a way that builds trust.
Affirmations
❓
I can disagree with someone without making them my enemy.
Conflict does not have to threaten connection.
I can listen without immediately defending myself.
I can address a problem without attacking a person.
I can take a pause without abandoning the conversation.
I can be accountable without making myself the villain.
I can choose curiosity when my first instinct is to judge.
I can communicate honestly while still being respectful.
Being wrong does not make me unworthy of respect.
I don't have to win every conflict; I can choose to protect the connection.
